A laid-back ambience, a diverse mix of people and an electric character are the hallmarks of
'everyone's favourite city'
Getting around
Driving in San Francisco is quite tricky due to the one-way streets, traffic, infamous
gradients and lack of parking, but you shouldn't need to use the car much once you're there.
Walking is highly recommended as a way of getting around the city, if you don't mind the
physical challenge. To give your legs a break from the hills, make use of the good public
transport system of famous rattling cable cars, historic street cars, the underground light
railway, buses and trolley buses operated by MUNI. It's worth buying a multi-day pass if you're
staying in the city for a few days.
Must sees
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Alcatraz Island
- Fisherman's Wharf
- Chinatown
- Lombard Street - America's crookedest thoroughfare
Must buys
San Francisco certainly has its fair share of shopping stores, particularly around Union Square
where a large number are clustered, including both well-known high street names and unique
shops selling everything from antiques to boutique fashions. Not far from here stands the
glass-domed Crocker Galleria with over 40 sophisticated shops spread over three levels - an
ideal place to pick up gifts. Others worth visiting include Stonestown Galleria, San Francisco
Shopping Center with its unique spiral escalator and Ghirardelli Square - an open-air centre
filled with shops.
Must tries
Teeming with places to dine, San Francisco's rich ethnic mix provides a vast range of feasting
options, from formal to informal, local seafood to international cuisine, and alfresco to
indoor intimacy. Head for Fisherman's Wharf for Italian seafood with waterfront views and
sample clam chowder. After dinner, head out on the town. The entertainment scene reflects the
cultural diversity of this liberal city and the choices are countless. Music is big and
everything from playful jazz tunes to the fast beat of dance music can be heard long into the
night. Gay clubs are not only numerous but make popular venues where everyone can dance the
night away.
