Driving Abroad
Driving overseas is a great way to explore, and at many of our destinations you can hire a car any time. However, a high proportion of holiday accidents are road accidents. The rules of the road can be very different, so it is important that you obey them. Here are our essential tips and advice for before you embark on your road trip on holiday.
Choosing a Rental Company

Before you commit to a car rental company, check how close they are to your arrival point, whether they are on or off the airport and whether they are open 24 hours. Finally get an estimate of the total cost, including taxes and 'extras'.
Choosing a Car

Do choose the right sized car for your needs; a small one may be cheapest but you'll curse yourself when you're trying to cram cases, prams and other paraphernalia into its miniscule boot.
Do..........

...research your destination, learning about the road conditions and motoring advice for
your destination.
Do ask about any special last minute deals; there may be a high demand for cars in your
category while more luxurious cars are languishing unbooked.
Make sure you have the emergency number to contact should your hire car break down.
Don't..........

...pick up the hire car directly after a long haul flight, and if you must, don't drink
alcohol on the plane. If there is the slightest scent on your breath the company may refuse to
hand you the car.
Don't be a "no show". If you decide to take your Thomas Cook transfer instead, let
the rental company know as soon as possible - some have started to charge fees.
Thomas Cook Team Tip - Driving Abroad

Read over the contract to ensure all details are correct and keep the contract with you when
driving - it is your proof that you are legally allowed to do so.
Take your time to familiarise yourself with the vehicle before you set off - check the mirrors
are properly adjusted and locate essentials like lights, windscreen wipers and indicator
switches.
