Knossos in Crete
Knossos is a huge attraction for visitors interested in finding out about Crete's history and its first settlers.
The excavations of Knossos were carried out by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans in 1851 and took a total of 35 years to complete. The discovery is of paramount importance to Crete's history as it dates the ancient city back to around 2000 BC. This means that Knossos is therefore considered to be the oldest city in the whole of Europe.
Tour groups around the site operate in a number of different European languages. Remember to bring a hat and wear sun cream as most of the Bronze Age village isn't under shelter.
