The Vietnamese dong (VND) is the official currency of Hanoi. In Vietnam it's illegal to ask for payment in any other currency. Banknotes come in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000 and 500,000. While coins have values of 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000.
Restaurants, shops and hotels in Hanoi generally accept credit and debit cards. ATMs can be found throughout Hanoi, but if you venture into the rural surroundings they become less commonplace.
